Hershel ‘Woody’ Williams with the gold star families monument

A Permanent Reminder of Lasting Sacrifice

The Gold Star Families Memorial Monuments exist to honor Gold Star Families, memorialize the fallen, and serve as a permanent reminder of the cost of freedom. Gold Star Families are the immediate relatives of servicemen & women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

These monuments are being built across the country in a beautiful show of support for Gold Star Families, and the Little Rock monument is the first and only one approved to be erected on state capitol grounds. With state approval and groundbreaking behind us, we’re looking to the community to help fund this important project.

The National Effort to Honor Gold Star families

The Gold Star Monuments project was born out of the passion of Hershel “Woody” Williams, who spent time as a boy delivering Western Union death notices to families who had lost a loved one in battle during WWII. His vision has been further brought to life by the Hershel “Woody” Williams Medal of Honor Foundation. There are currently 13 completed monuments and 39 in-progress projects across 29 U.S. states.

Each monument is made up of four beautiful black granite panels, featuring scenes of each unique community’s fallen heroes. The most prominent and breathtaking feature of the monument is the lifesize cutout of a soldier saluting, which is a symbolic representation of each family’s lost loved one. The gap in granite that takes this shape visually references the gap in each family as a result of their sacrifice.

Partnership Between State & Community

While there are many of these monuments built or being built across the nation, the Little Rock monument stands alone. It is the first and only Gold Star Monument being constructed on the grounds of a state capitol, a true show of support from the State of Arkansas for these families who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
